About Emily – Founder of The Business of Cake

I’m Emily, the face behind the Business of Cake. My journey began in 2014 at the end of maternity leave when I knew I didn’t want to return to full-time work. I wanted to be at home with my daughter, yet I still needed to earn, so I took a leap and decided to start a baking business from home. That leap became Emily B’s Cakes, and it set me on a path I hadn’t expected.

Saying Yes to Everything

In the beginning, like many new home bakers, I said yes to everything. Cupcakes, wedding cakes, novelty cakes, postal brownies. If someone asked for it, I made it. As time went on, I realised that being able to bake something didn’t always mean it was right for my business. I still remember the constant juggling of different orders and the worry over turning customers away. At that stage, it felt as though the only way to grow your baking business was to accept every request.

Finding My Direction

Eventually, I stepped back and reassessed what I truly wanted. This led me to reshape my home baking business around the work I loved most – cupcake bouquets and floral buttercream cakes. From that moment, everything began to change. I finally had a clear direction, a signature style and clients who valued the care I put into each order. The stressful requests eased away and my confidence strengthened.

Why I Started Business of Cake

Because of that shift, I knew I wanted to help others who were working out how to start a baking business or move their current business forward. Many passionate bakers begin with enthusiasm, yet without any guidance on the business side of baking it can feel overwhelming.

Looking back, I understand how heavy those early years felt. I dealt with anxiety, imposter syndrome and the pressure to meet every expectation. Much of that came from not knowing what I didn’t know. I had to learn how to price cakes for profit, how to attract the right clients, how to stay organised and how to build a home bakery that supported my life rather than pulled from it.
